Call to Action: 12.08.16

Today’s CALL TO ACTION 12.08.16:
The President-Elect, a climate-change skeptic, has chosen Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt to run the Environmental Protection Agency. Pruitt is one of the leaders in a still-pending 28-state lawsuit against the Clean Power Act. He has previously benefited from close ties to the industries that he would be in charge of regulating. For example, the head of Continental Energy, a North Dakota oil and gas company that also works in Oklahoma, was co-chairman of Pruitt’s 2013 reelection campaign.
TODAY’S NEWS PIECE:
“As Oklahoma’s top law enforcement official, Mr. [Scott] Pruitt has fought environmental regulations — particularly the climate change rules. Although Mr. Obama’s rules were not completed until 2015, Mr. Pruitt was one of a handful of attorneys general, along with Greg Abbott of Texas, who began planning as early as 2014 for a coordinated legal effort to fight them. That resulted in a 28-state lawsuit against the administration’s rules. A decision on the case is pending in a federal court, but it is widely expected to advance to the Supreme Court. As Mr. Pruitt has sought to use legal tools to fight environmental regulations on the oil and gas companies that are a major part of his state’s economy, he has also worked with those companies. For example, the 2014 investigation by The Times found that energy lobbyists drafted letters for Mr. Pruitt to send, on state stationery, to the E.P.A., the Interior Department, the Office of Management and Budget and even President Obama, outlining the economic hardship of the environmental rules.”

CALL TO ACTION: 12.07.16

Today’s CALL TO ACTION 12.07.16:

The President-Elect has nominated former Presidential candidate and retired neurosurgeon, Ben Carson, to the head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Carson has no experience in managing a department of this size or in the world public housing development. He has previously spoken out about “safety-net” programs that help minorities and low-income citizens and how helping the poor is not the job of the government.

TODAY’S NEWS PIECE: “If Carson remains true to his political commentary about the nation’s housing programs, he could pursue a conservative agenda sharply at odds with efforts by the Obama administration to promote racial integration in housing and with other anti-segregation policies championed by minority groups such as the NAACP. Carson might also abandon or place new restrictions on government subsidies and other programs that conservatives criticize as fostering a culture of overreliance on government handouts, according to housing advocates alarmed by his nomination.

It could prove difficult, however, for Carson to manage, much less change the fundamental course of an organization as massive as HUD. By his admission, Carson has never run an organization of that size and is far from fluent in housing-policy issues. His leadership of the department will be a test case for Trump’s stated governing philosophy that it is better for Washington outsiders, even those with no policy experience, to hold the levers of federal power.”

“Coming to lead an agency that serves the poorest people in the country with a philosophy of if people are that poor it’s because they’re not trying hard enough could have a big impact on the people HUD serves,” said Diane Yentel, president of the National Low Income Housing Coalition.”

CALL TO ACTION: If you’re concerned about the potential changes Ben Carson’s lack of experience or how his appointment may affect efforts to foster racial integration and anti-segregation policies, we urge you to speak up and contact your state representatives. You may also wish to donate to programs that support racial equality and anti-discriminatory actions related to housing.

NATIONAL LOW INCOME HOUSING COALITION: “The National Low Income Housing Coalition is dedicated solely to achieving socially just public policy that assures people with the lowest incomes in the United States have affordable and decent homes. Our goals are to preserve existing federally assisted homes and housing resources, expand the supply of low income housing, and establish housing stability as the primary purpose of federal low income housing policy.”

Today’s Call to Action: 12.05.16

Today’s CALL TO ACTION – 12.05.16:

The Dakota Access Pipeline was halted yesterday after months of protests by Native American tribes and allies, who were concerned that a spill could threaten the water supplies of its people. This victory is a good example of the power of protest as we continue to face what the next administration brings to the American people. And we must remain vigilant and supportive of the tribes, as this win could be short depending on the actions by our President-Elect.

TODAY’S ARTICLE: “The victory for the Standing Rock Sioux and its allies could be short-lived, though. President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to support pipelines such as this one. And Kelcy Warren, the chief executive of the pipeline company Energy Transfer Partners, has been a major contributor to the Republican Party and Trump’s campaign. Trump, who once owned a stake worth between $500,000 and $1 million in Energy Transfer Partners, has sold the shares, his spokeswoman Hope Hicks said. At the time of his most recent disclosure statement in May, Trump owned $100,000 to $250,000 of stock in Phillips 66, which has a 25 percent stake in the Dakota Access project.”

CALL TO ACTION: Call and/or write to thank President Obama for not granting the final easement for the Dakota Access Pipeline. Show your support of this action!
